Richard P. Chait Professor of Higher Education, Harvard
Graduate School of Education
Richard Chait is project director of the Project on
Faculty Appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education. Chait has primary responsibility for all
research initiatives and is liaison to Tulane University
and the University of South Dakota for Challenge Grant #2.
He has published several books, including Beyond
Traditional Tenure (1982), The Effective Board of
Trustees (1993), and Improving the Performance of
Governing Boards (1996). Prior to joining the faculty at
Harvard, he was professor of higher education and
management at the University of Maryland, College Park,
and Mandel Professor of Non-Profit Management at Case
Western Reserve University. Chait has a B.A. in history
from Rutgers University, and an M.A. (History) and Ph.D.
(Higher Education) from the University of Wisconsin.

James P. Honan Lecturer on Education, Harvard
Graduate School of Education
Jim Honan is educational program chair for the
Project on Faculty Appointments at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education. Honan has primary responsibility for
all conferences and secondary responsibility for the
faculty recruitment and case study research initiatives.
He is liaison to Olivet College for Challange Grant #2.
He also serves as educational chair of the Institute for
Educational Management (IEM), a summer executive
education program for college and university
administrators. Honan previously was institutional
research coordinator in the Office of Budgets at Harvard,
project analyst in the Harvard Financial Aid Office, and
executive assistant to the president at Lesley College (MA).
Honan has a B.A. from Marist College, an M.A. (Education
and Human Development) from George Washington University,
and an Ed.M. and Ed.D. from Harvard University.

Cathy Trower Senior Researcher, Harvard
Graduate School of Education
Cathy Trower is senior researcher at the Project on
Faculty Appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education. Trower has primary responsibility for the
Information Resource Center and secondary responsibility
for the faculty recruitment and shared governance
research initiatives. She is also liaison to
University of South Florida and Seattle Pacific
University for Challenge Grant #2. She is the
author of several papers, articles, and case studies on
faculty employment issues. Trower previously served as a
senior level administrator at Johns Hopkins University
and as a faculty member and chair of the business
division at Mount Mercy College. Trower holds a B.B.A.
and an M.B.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. (Higher
Education Administration) from the University of Maryland,
College Park.

KerryAnn O'Meara
Project Coordinator, Harvard Graduate School of
Education
KerryAnn O'Meara serves as project coordinator of the Project on Faculty
Appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She leads the
project's effort to disseminate cutting-edge research data and analyses,
conducts project evaluation activities and conference planning, manages
the budget, and assists with project research. KerryAnn received her bachelors
in English from Loyola College Baltimore, her masters in higher education
from the Ohio State University, and and her Ph.D. in Education Policy
from the University of Maryland.

Frances L. Shavers Research Assistant,
Harvard Graduate School of Education
Frances Shavers is a third-year doctoral student at the Harvard Graduate
School of Education, concentrating in higher education administration
and policy. Shavers' responsibilities include assisting with various Project
programs and research initiatives. Prior to attending Harvard, she held
positions in both the Notre Dame Alumni Association and Notre Dame Athletic
Department as director of alumni clubs and life skills coordinator, respectively.
Shavers holds a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and Ed.M. from
Harvard.

Jared Bleak Research Assistant, Harvard
University Graduate School of Education
Jared Bleak is a third-year doctoral student at Harvard concentrating
in higher education administration and policy. His duties include assisting
with the Challenge Grant 1 project and several of the research initiatives.
He is the author or co-author of several case studies and articles on
topics as diverse as online education and superstitious behavior in sports.
Prior to coming to Harvard, Bleak was the director of school relations
at Southern Utah University, and most recently worked in the office of
the Chancellor of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education. He holds
a B.S. in sociology from Brigham Young University and an Ed.M. from Harvard.

Cheryl Sternman Rule Research
Assistant, Harvard Graduate School of Education
Cheryl Sternman Rule is a research analyst at the Project on Faculty
Appointments at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She serves as
a liaison to the projects partner institutions and coordinates focus
groups and data collection for the projects multiple research initiatives.
She also works closely on matters related to collective bargaining, shared
governance, and the Information Resource Center database and CD-ROM. Rule
previously served as a high school teacher with the Peace Corps in Eritrea
(East Africa) and as a paralegal for the U.S. Department of Justice. She
holds a B.A. in philosophy from Haverford College and an Ed.M. from Harvard
University.

Heidi Neiman Research Assistant,
Harvard Graduate School of Education
Heidi Neiman is a second-year doctoral student concentrating in higher
education administration and policy. Her responsibilities include assisting
with various Project programs and research initiatives. Prior to coming
to Harvard, Neiman held a number of positions at Simmons College Graduate
School of Management, including Director of Administration and Director
of the MBA Program. She holds a B.A. in ancient Greek from Vassar College,
an M.B.A. from Simmons College, and an Ed.M. from Harvard University.

Jordan Bach Staff Assistant,
Harvard Graduate School of Education
Jordan Bach is the staff assistant at the Project on Faculty Appointments
at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He directs incoming phone
calls and provides general information regarding the Project. In addition,
he maintains the Project's financial records and provides day-to-day clerical
assistance. Jordan holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Oberlin College and
a B.Mus. in Cello Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
Most recently he received an Artist's Diploma Certificate, also in Cello
Performance, from Brandeis University.

Charles T. Clotfelter
Professor of Public Policy Studies and Economics,
Duke University
Charlie Clotfelter, a professor at Duke since 1979, began
his career in higher education as a Teaching Fellow at
Harvard University in 1972. He is the author of several
books and numerous articles on higher education economics
including: "Buying the Best: Cost Escalation in
Elite Higher Education" (1996) and "Economic
Challenges in Higher Education" (1991). He is
leading the research initiative on "Voluntary
Incentives" for the Project on Faculty Appointments.

Christine M. Licata
Associate Dean, Rochester Institute of Technology/National
Institute for the Deaf
Christine Licata has worked in the field of education for
30 years, holding various positions including department
chair, division director, and assistant dean. Her
research focuses on faculty evaluation, specifically post-tenure
review. She is a senior associate at the American
Association for Higher Education, coordinating the post-tenure
review activities of the New Pathways Project and is
liaison to Arizona State University for Challenge Grant #2
with the Project on Faculty Appointments.

R. Eugene Rice
Scholar in Residence, American Association for Higher
Education
At AAHE, Gene Rice is director of the Forum on Faculty
Roles and Rewards, a national project currently in its
fifth year that focuses on reexamining faculty priorities
and reward structures. Before moving to AAHE, Rice was
vice president and dean of the faculty at Antioch College.
Gene is liaison to University of North Carolina for
Challenge Grant #2 with the Project on Faculty
Appointments.

John K. Urice Immediate
past Vice President and Provost (1994-98), Illinois State
University
John Urice has served in a variety academic and
administrative positions for more than twenty-five years
including chief academic officer, twice as dean,
associate dean, MBA program director, and executive
director of a state agency. He has published and
presented widely on academic administration, non-profit
management, and cultural policy. He has served as a
consultant to numerous governmental agencies (both
domestic and international) and non-profit organizations.
Currently on sabbatical from Illinois State, he is a
Senior Research Associate for the Illinois Board of
Higher Education working on statewide policy issues. John
is working on the shared governance research initiative
with the Project on Faculty Appointments.
