The COACHE Survey was designed through the Study of New Scholars, a process that included extensive research, discussions with six focus groups, and experiences of pilot sites including 12 prestigious colleges and universities. The result is a survey "by junior faculty, for junior faculty," in which every question is designed to produce an actionable policy response.

The core element of COACHE is an electronic survey, which takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete online, asks faculty to assess their experiences regarding promotion and tenure, the nature of their work, policies and practices, and the general climate, culture and level of collegiality on their campuses. Respondents can stop, save, and resume the survey at any time. Confidentiality and anonymity will be assured, as no identifiers are matched to reported responses, and no disaggregated data will be presented for any subset of fewer than five respondents. Furthermore, COACHE will not publish or disseminate any ordinal rankings or scores of participating institutions.

We recommend that institutions administer the survey every third year. Of course, it is up to you whether to participate more or less frequently. We handle all data collection, follow-up, and design and delivery of reports. Institutions need only send a cover letter to eligible faculty and provide COACHE with faculty names and contact information.
