ProfileMatthew Jukes’ research aims to improve access and quality of education in developing countries. He is interested in the evaluation of education interventions through the development of assessment methods. Matthew has applied these methods to the evaluation of many different education interventions, with a particular focus on school health programs. These programs aim to improve children’s learning through the treatment and prevention of common conditions such as worm infections, malaria and iron deficiency. This work is described in a recent book: Health, Nutrition and Education for All: Leveling the Playing Field. Matthew’s work has also addressed the intersection of health and education through work on HIV/AIDS prevention education and children made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. The other main area of Matthew’s research investigates how many children in sub-Saharan Africa succeed at school despite many challenges facing them and their families. Matthew’s has conducted research in Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines. IN THE NEWS: Antimalarials 'give children an edge' at school.
