IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS

----------
Spring Field Experience Program (FEP; S-997) Info and Deadlines

If you are thinking about or intending to pursue a field placement for course credit this spring, please be aware of FEP processes and deadlines.

You must receive approval from the FEP Office to enroll for credit in S-997. Students must first find and solidify a site placement, and then propose it to the FEP Office so that it can be approved for credit.

Interviews for approval will be conducted by FEP Teaching Fellows Monday, January 31 through Wednesday, February 8. February 8 is a strict deadline - ALL students must interview by then in order to have the option of signing up for S-997.

In the interview with the FEP TF, you will discuss the internship, receive guidance and, if it is approved, be given a Learning Contract. All Learning Contracts must be filled out, signed, and returned to the FEP Office by Friday, February 10th at NOON. You will NOT be signed up for S-997 unless your Learning Contract is in by that deadline.

Please visit the FEP web site (http://www.gse.harvard.edu/~fep) for more comprehensive information regarding the program, including a link to on-line postings, downloadable handouts, etc., and/or feel free to contact Julie Bourquin, FEP Program Coordinator: 617.496.4816; fep@gse.harvard.edu; located in 402 Gutman.

Important Information for EndNote users at HGSE

To: All GSE EndNote users
From: Gutman Library Research & Instruction
Re: Critical EndNote setting change

Because of some recent Harvard University Library server reconfigurations, all EndNote users need to delete one bit of script in the Preferences section of their EndNote program and substitute another.

Do it as follows:

1. Open EndNote
2. Click on Edit
3. Select Preferences at the bottom of the menu that appears
4. In the Edit Preferences pop-up box, scroll down to the last item, Open URL, and click on it.
5. In the upper box that appears on the right, labeled OpenURL Path, there is a short URL (http://sfx.hul.harvard.edu:82/sfx_local). Delete the 82.
6. The new URL should read: http://sfx.hul.harvard.edu/sfx_local

This change allows you to continue to link to full text at Harvard where available. If you have questions or problems, please contact us by email (reference@gse.harvard.edu), phone (617-495-3421) or in person.

Dean's Diversity Innovation Fund (DDIF) Deadline - Feb. 16

This is a great opportunity to have a diversity-focused project funded for the benefit of the HGSE community!

Past funding has sponsored speakers, film festivals, discussion groups, cultural celebrations, conferences and much more.

The next deadline for funding for the Dean's Diversity Innovation Fund is February 16 at 5 p.m. Proposals must be dropped off in hard copy, with a cover sheet, in the Office of Student Affairs, Larsen 101. The cover sheet for proposals, sample proposals, and additional information are available on-line in the OSA web page at this URL: http://www.gse.harvard.edu/osa/ma/ddif.html. Please allow up to two weeks after the deadline to receive a response to a proposal. Accordingly, the scheduling of your event should take this timeline into consideration.

Recognizing that students have ideas for programs or activities that would enhance HGSE's attention to diversity, the Dean's Office established the Diversity Innovation Fund to support, with small grants, student-initiated ideas that are designed to broaden the conversation at HGSE and allow for more varied perspectives, experiences, and fora for exchange. This fund is available to students through a short proposal process.

Responding to the Religious Right - Feb. 9

Rabbi Michael Lerner discusses
THE LEFT HAND OF GOD: Responding to the Religious Right

7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 9, 2006

Cambridge Forum
3 Church Street (Harvard Square)
Cambridge, MA 02138

Free and Open to the Public!

Why do so many Americans vote against their own economic interests? How has the political right used its alliance with the religious right to achieve social dominance? Why has the political left failed to tap into Americans' deepest values? Internationally renowned theologian Rabbi Michael Lerner examines the new roles that religion and faith play in American political life in his new book The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right. While the Right presents a self-serving and distorted vision of traditional religious values, the Left continues to ignore the spiritual needs of the American people. Lerner presents a vision that incorporates and goes beyond the ideas of contemporary liberal politics as he articulates an eight-point spiritual covenant with America.

Rabbi Michael Lerner is internationally known as the editor of Tikkun Magazine: A Bimonthly Jewish Critique of Politics, Culture and Society. He earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of California, Berkeley and in clinical psychology from the Wright Institute. He is rabbi of Beyt Tikkun synagogue, which meets in San Francisco and Berkeley.

Cambridge Forums are free and open to the public. Open discussion, moderated by Bernard Steinberg of Harvard Hillel, follows speaker presentation. Copies of Lerner's book will be for sale at the event courtesy of the Harvard Book Store. Co-sponsored by the Progressive Jewish Alliance at Harvard University and Don and Jeannette McInnes. Events are taped and edited for public radio broadcast throughout the nation. Edited CDs are available to the public by contacting 617-495-2727. Select forums can be viewed in their entirety on demand by visiting our website at www.cambridgeforum.org and clicking on the WGBH Forum Network.

Equity of Opportunity for All Children
Jason Kamras, National Teacher of the Year and GSE alum

Wednesday February 15, 2006

Askwith Lecture Hall, Longfellow Hall

Jason Kamras is committed to ensuring that all of America’s children, regardless of background, receive an excellent education that provides them with the unlimited opportunity to pursue their dreams. In his years at John Philip Sousa Middle School, a District of Columbia public school, Kamras has made a dramatic impact on his students’ academic achievement and personal growth by emphasizing high expectations, a nurturing environment, and a focus that continually takes them beyond their immediate world. He believes eliminating inequity in the resources available to schools, which limits access to a quality education, will ensure true opportunity for all children. Kathleen McCartney, Acting Dean and Gerald S. Lesser Professor of Early Childhood Development, will provide an introduction.

For information about the forum, contact Meghan Liegel at meghan_liegel@gse.harvard.edu. For more information about Jason Kamras and the National Teacher of the Year Program, visit http://www.ccsso.org/projects/national_teacher_of_the_year/national_teachers/6194.cfm

CLUBS, ORGANIZATIONS, & COMMITTEES

----------
Ed School Basketball Club

Interested in playing basketball with your fellow HGSE students (and possibly staff)?

A group of students has established an Ed School Basketball Club that will allow students, staff and friends of HGSE to let off some much needed steam through basketball. Anyone with an interest in playing is encourages to join, irrespective of individual skill level. Ideally, there will be enough interest so that we can set up two leagues: one for more competitive players and one for people who are more interested in playing for recreation. In addition to league play, the Club will facilitate organized pick-up basketball games at various times through the semester.

Although we are in the nascent phases of organizing, 50 students have already signed up and we have already been afforded gym space at Hemenway Gymnasium for our league. This is a terrific opportunity to get out of the library for a few hours each week and have fun with your fellow students. Remember that there's only 4 months left!

Again, we encourage EVERYONE who is interested to join up. For more information please contact:

Ben Neumann ben.neumann@gmail.com
Tony Kim kiman1@gse.harvard.edu
Nathaniel Marcum marcumna@gse.harvard.edu

AND Sign up on the NEW (as of 2/2/06) website for the league at: http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/edschoolbball/

Phi Delta Kappa - Feb. 28

Greetings HGSE Students,

I have attached an application for you to join Phi Delta Kappa International as requested by some students. On the application you will see a $5.00 fee for processing. The Harvard Chapter Executive Board has agreed to pay this fee so please ignore it. Also on the bottom of page two is a place for my member ID. Here it is: 289366. The requirements for joining this honor society and association is to complete the application, make your check for $85 payable to Harvard PDK, and write a one page essay on your Philosophy of Education. Please send all three items, as soon as possible, to me at P.O. Box 1367, W. Chatham, MA 02669. My phone number is 508-945-8752. If there is any confusion with the application please email me soon.

We are planning a Focus Group with refreshments on Tuesday, Feb. 28 in Larson Hall 402 to have you tell us what you would like for programming or service for the coming year, to meet you, have a discussion and interchange with you, and to find out what your interests are.

We are planning the Initiation for Wednesday, April 5, from 4-6. Refreshments. The place will be announced in the next email, as well as the speaker. We are truly looking forward to meeting you once again on Feb. 25. The Executive Board had a wonderful time talking to the students who were able to attend the "Meet and Greet" on December 6, 2005. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards, Roseann E. Stephens, Ph.D., VP Membership

JOB & VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

----------
Workforce Recruitment Program for students with disabilities - Feb. 10

INTERVIEWS FOR THE WORKFORCE RECRUITMENT PROGRAM WILL BE HELD ON FEBRUARY 10, 2006 in Larsen G05
All Students with Disabilities at HGSE are eligible

The Workforce recruitment Program (WRP) is coordinated by the Office of Disability Employment Policy, U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Defense. The Workforce Recruitment Program aims to provide summer work experience, or full-time employment, for university students with disabilities. The program develops partnerships with other federal agencies, each of whom makes a commitment to provide summer jobs, full time positions, and internships. Each year, volunteer recruiters who are top administrators representing the spectrum of U.S. government agencies interview about 1,500 students with disabilities at college and university campuses across the nation. A database listing the qualifications, job preferences, and references of each student is generated and dispersed so all agencies have access to the talented students participating in the interviews. Students are contacted by agencies and individuals and/or students can also contact individuals and agencies in whom they are interested.

This is the fourth year that students with disabilities from Harvard graduate School of Education have been interviewed. We currently have HGSE alumni working in policy positions at the EPA, the DOE and the DOL because of their participation in this program. It is an opportunity for students to interview for positions which would not otherwise be available to those outside of the federal government’s seniority track. It is also an opportunity for government agencies to recruit talent without the constraints of internal government policies. We urge you to consider this opportunity if you think you would like to work in a federal agency or program. Locating or identifying a specific job, government agency and career goal is helpful but not necessary in preparation for the interview.

Students who are interested in signing up for an interview slot on February tenth should contact Eileen Berger, Access & Disability Services Office, in Larsen G05 ASAP for an interview time, application package and additional information. Interviews will take place between 8:30 and 4:00 pm.

Spanish Volunteer Program

Are you a native or fluent Spanish Speaker?
Are you interested in bilingual education?
Are you looking for hands-on experience to complement your studies at HGSE?

Volunteer to read in Spanish to second graders! The HGSE Office of School Partnerships, along with Cambridge School Volunteers, is establishing a brand new volunteer program, Lectores y Amiguitos, designed to partner Spanish speakers from the HGSE community with second graders at the Amigos School in Cambridge (just a 15 minute walk from the HGSE campus). Volunteers will read to a small group of two to three students from 2:00 - 2:30pm every Thursday for the spring semester, beginning Feb. 9th. The program is a wonderful way to connect with the Cambridge community, get exposure to a dual immersion bilingual school, and share your love of reading with a second-grade friend!
